BIDGLORY FIELD GUIDE

Looking for a D-Tools alternative? Read this first

D-Tools is the incumbent for a reason. Before you switch, it's worth being honest about where it still wins — and where its foundations genuinely hold a growing shop back.

Let's start with the fair part: D-Tools has been the default for AV system design and estimating for a long time, it has a deep catalog ecosystem, and a lot of successful integrators run their whole business on it. If it fits your workflow and you're happy, you don't need to switch, and no honest comparison should tell you otherwise. This guide is for the shops who feel friction and want to understand whether an alternative actually addresses it.

What "built on FileMaker" means for you

D-Tools System Integrator is a FileMaker Pro application. D-Tools Cloud delivers a similar stack through the browser. FileMaker is a mature platform, but the architecture has practical consequences worth understanding: the desktop client is a Windows-centric experience, multi-user setups typically involve a FileMaker Server and a sync model, and you're layering an AV workflow on top of a general-purpose database engine rather than a system designed from scratch around bids.

None of that is disqualifying. But if you've ever waited on a sync, wrangled a Windows Server just to let two estimators collaborate, or wished the tool behaved like a modern web app, you're feeling the foundation — not a settings problem you can configure away.

What a browser-native workspace changes

The alternative worth considering isn't "the same thing, cheaper." It's a different architecture: a pure web application with no FileMaker license, no Windows Server, and no sync step, where real-time collaboration is a property of the data model rather than a server you maintain. BidGlory is built that way from day one. It's developed and maintained as custom line-of-business software by ProjectThunder, a senior .NET studio — which is relevant here because the collaboration and audit behavior below comes from engineering the data model directly, not bolting features onto a database template.

Where an alternative genuinely pulls ahead

  • Real-time multi-user editing. Live presence and optimistic concurrency mean two estimators work the same bid without a sync and without silent overwrites — see multi-user AV estimating without the overwrites.
  • Electrical depth. NEC Article 220 load calculations, panel schedules, and three-phase balance analysis live inside the bid, not in a separate spreadsheet.
  • A human-gated AI drafter. Cover letters and scope text drafted in seconds, blocked from export until an estimator approves.
  • Portable export. A round-trippable .bgbid file means your data isn't trapped — a healthy pressure on any vendor, including us.
  • Self-host or managed. Keep the data on your own hardware if you have a reason to, or let it be managed.

Where D-Tools still wins today

Honesty cuts both ways. D-Tools has a larger, longer-established manufacturer catalog ecosystem and integration partnerships built over many years. Its install base means a deep bench of consultants, training, and community knowledge. And BidGlory is single-tenant today — one company per install, with multi-pod horizontal scale-out on the roadmap rather than shipped. If you need a massive shared catalog network on day one, or you're standardizing hundreds of seats across offices right now, the incumbent's maturity is a real advantage. We'd rather you know that up front than discover it in month two.

How to actually decide

Don't compare feature checklists — compare against your own last three bids. Take a real recent job and ask: how many times did I retype the same number? How long did the proposal take after the bid was "done"? Did anyone's edits get lost? Where did the customer's questions live? Then run that same job through the alternative. If it collapses the busywork you actually felt, the switch pays for itself. If it doesn't, stay put — the best tool is the one that removes your friction, not the one with the longest feature list.

If you're earlier in the process and still mapping the category, start with AV integrator bid software: what actually matters, which lays out the buying criteria before you get to any specific vendor.
